Great Blue Heron with Fish

Blue Heron Eating Fish by Linh Dinh
My mother in law sent me the link to these selected shots that are part of the 2010 National Geographic Photo contest (winners to be announced this month).
I have seen many, many Great Blue Herons growing up in Maryland, living in Virginia, and on our bike tour. However, I have had the chance to really take a long close look at one. It is amazing how much color variation there is, what a vivid orange the eyes are, and check out the skewering power of the beak! Note: according to my bird conservation friends, herons and cranes will, if provoked, go for your eyes in an attack.
See fish, consider eyeball, proceed with great caution. And don't say I didn't warn you!
