German sampler

German sampler from HLATC

I thought samplers were simple pieces done by young girls to learn their stitches.  I pictured early Americana images, Victorian weeping willows and the alphabet.  True, some samplers were just that but others are the work of more seasoned stitchers designed to showcase their talents.  This piece from Germany in the early 1800s is fantastic. I aspire to stitch that well.  For larger image.
