Beautiful South Dakota

Dagwood on Day 1
Day one on the way to Scenic, SD

I had the camera most of the time. I tend to not take many pictures because it makes you stop and fiddle with the camera instead of just enjoying where you are.  But, I did take a few and there is photographic evidence that Dagwood was there (aside from all the glamour shots he took of me).

Pine Ridge
Day One, still on Pine Ridge

I really loved the rolling hills. Saw lots of horses-- many followed us or came up to the fence to check us out.

Scenic Bar

The bar in Scenic, SD was (in)famous. Now defunct.  The only thing open in town is the Post Office.  We camped in Scenic at the end of Day One.

Scenic drunk tank

Scenic was obviously prepared for the heavy drinking of its heyday.  Hence, the drunk tank next door to the bar...

Scenic jail
as well as the two celled jail down the street.

An interesting barn I saw covered in metal.  Pretty cool looking.

And, a beautiful tree lined part of the Mickelson trail.

Prairie Wind Casino to Wounded Knee, SD

We had a great last day of riding from the Prairie Wind Casino to the Tatanka Lodge. Rolling hills with cattle and horses-- we were ever on the look out for buffalo but did not see any. Stopped at Big Bats in Pine Ridge for a Gatorade. The traffic in Pine Ridge was serious! Stopped at Sioux Nation grocery store too. Got to the Tatanka Lodge and the manager, Jenn Robertson, made us a delicious salmon dinner (or supper depending on where you grew up).

Hot Springs to Prairie Wind Casino

Beautiful ride this morning. Tailwind, easy hills, and the casino hotel was 25 miles closer than Google said it was.

Saw a rattlesnake.

Custer to Hot Springs, SD

Severe headwinds (30-50 mph) convinced us to abandon our plan to do all 109 miles of the trail down to Edgemont. We headed into Hot Springs instead, which is what everyone advised us to do anyway.

Hill City to Custer, SD

Easy ride down the trail today, ending in ice cream.

Behind me in the photo is the Crazy Horse memorial.

Saw another marmot.

Hill City to Mt. Rushmore and back

Took Old Hill City Road to Keystone - surreal landscape terminating in a bizzare vacationland of Keystone. Then a punishing 3-mile climb up to Mt. Rushmore. Ate a bison burger, looked at the carvings, talked to some nice Tennesseeans, rode back a different route.

Want a good workout? Ride over Mt. Rushmore.

Deadwood to Hill City, SD

The Mickelson Trail is pretty cool. The weather was great and we shed our jackets and helmets and enjoyed miles and miles of easy climbs and luxurious descents.

Saw a marmot.

Meanwhile, back in Wounded Knee...

Rapid City to Deadwood, SD

Huge climb out of Rapid, saw some wild turkeys, stayed the night at a place called Trout Haven where you can catch a fish and they cook it for you. Meandered into Deadwood feeling awesome because of the three-mile coast down into the town.
