Does recycling increase resource extraction?

Another interesting (albeit short) discussion about recycling on Ask Metafilter.

The answer: Doubtful. The demand for aluminum is huge and the amount actually recycled is (I am guessing) relatively small and there probably isn't much interest in flooding the market and driving prices down even lower.

thepurification.org

There's a lively thread at Ask Metafilter about thepurification.org, a cryptic one-page countdown to... something.

By decompiling the source of the flash file at thepurification.org, mefites discovered that it contains references four geographic points which form a diamond, the center of which is (more or less) Taos, New Mexico.  This observation opened a floodgate of interesting and often amusing speculations about Taos.  It's probably not worth reading unless you read the whole thing.

All kinds of filth

Some religious wackos want to ban what is probably the most famous book about banning books.

"It's just all kinds of filth," said Alton Verm, adding that he had not read "Fahrenheit 451." "The words don't need to be brought out in class. I want to get the book taken out of the class."

How charming.
