The Road
September 29, 2006 - 12:20pm | MelvixI just finished The Road, by Cormac McCarthy. I liked it, but I wouldn't recommend it to you unless you don't mind risking the nightmares you might have after reading it. Yeesh.
I don't know if I can say much about it that isn't said better here in this review at the Village Voice.

September 27, 2006 - 7:21am | MelvixAccording to this article at treehugger.com, not all fluorescent bulbs live up to their advertised life expectancy, light output, or energy savings (although some apparently do). Commercial Electric doesn't seem to be represented in the study that's cited here, but Commercial Electric is apparently just a brand owned by a larger company called Technical Consumer Products. The ones I just bought at Home Depot aren't mentioned in this study either.

"...if every one of 110 million American households bought just one [fluorescent] bulb, took it home, and screwed it in the place of an ordinary 60-watt bulb, the energy saved would be enough to power a city of 1.5 million people."
I just had to replace a fluorescent bulb in the kitchen that I put in less than four years ago, which isn't supposed to happen. I went to Home Depot where I bought the bulbs and found that they no longer carry that brand (Commercial Electric). Also they didn't have any "soft yellow" anymore. I don't like the light from the white bulbs.

September 26, 2006 - 10:17am | MelvixMaybe they have good uptime... but man do I hate godaddy.com's hosting. If you buy one product from them, they use it as an excuse to shove a hundred more in front of you every time you use their management interface. If you log in as a customer, the menus in the top navigation are deliberately misleading so that you are constantly ending up on pages that are advertisements for more godaddy crap instead of the actual management page you're looking for. Terrible. And yet people consistently use them, again and again. I don't understand it.
